Sony Becomes KADOKAWA’s Largest Shareholder in Strategic Alliance

In a landmark collaboration, KADOKAWA CORPORATION and Sony Group Corporation have announced a strategic capital and business alliance to bolster their global content and intellectual property (IP) capabilities. On January 7, 2025, Sony will acquire 12,054,100 new shares in KADOKAWA through a third-party allotment, cementing its position as KADOKAWA’s largest shareholder with a 10% stake. The deal, valued at approximately 50 billion yen, represents a significant milestone in the two companies’ long-standing partnership.

Expanding a Global IP Ecosystem

The alliance is rooted in a shared vision to maximize the global value of both companies’ extensive IP portfolios. KADOKAWA, a leader in light novels, comics, games, and anime, will collaborate with Sony to expand its content reach and develop new media opportunities.

Planned initiatives include:

  • Global Adaptations: Collaborating on live-action films and TV drama adaptations of KADOKAWA’s IP for international audiences.
  • Anime Co-Productions: Co-developing anime works with Sony, leveraging its expertise in animation and distribution.
  • Enhanced Distribution: Expanding global access to KADOKAWA’s anime catalog through Sony’s distribution networks.

KADOKAWA CEO Takeshi Natsuno emphasized the alliance’s transformative potential:
