High Voltage: Aussie government throws graphite and HPA projects a tasty bone or two

Alpha HPA and Renascor Graphite receive a big sugar daddy hug from Albo this week
Lithium news: the “spot” pricing is trending… steadily right now. So that’s okay
KTA, LU7 and NWM make strong battery metals gains on the ASX this week

A look at who/what is turning heads right now in the volatile world of battery metals.

Right then, an ASX-focused battery metals round-up for another week. Let’s obviously start with lith… hang on, hang on…

No. Let’s go a little off the beaten High Voltage track for a change.

Let’s instead, begin with a high-purity alumina (HPA) player. And a spot of graphite for sh*ts and giggles, too.

And that’s because these have very much fallen into Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s focus this week amid a growing critical minerals push from the Australian government.

Local HPA and graphite projects rake in gov dollars

A joint media release with the PM and Minister for Trade and Tourism, Senator Don Farrell, was released on Wednesday, and it focused on two sets of funding for Australian critical minerals companies – Alpha HPA (ASX:A4N) and Renascor Resources (ASX:RNU). Both companies are focused on providing for the battery metals industry.

The loans come via Export Finance Australia (EFA) through the government’s $4 billion Critical Minerals Facility, as well as through the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility and EFA’s Commercial Account.

Alpha HPA is set to receive $400 million from Albo and co, to help it deliver Australia’s first high-purity alumina processing facility in Queensland.

The government release notes that the Alpha HPA project in Gladstone is expected to create about 490 jobs during construction and more than 200 jobs on completion.

“The company will use Australian-owned IP and technology to process high-purity alumina – a critical mineral used in LED lighting, semiconductors, and lithium-ion batteries and other high-tech applications,” reads the media release.

Meanwhile, graphite player Renascor is also very much benefitting from Aussie government funding late this week.

A $185m loan to the company has now been conditionally approved, and that funding will be utilised to fast-track the construction of the upstream portion of the BAM (Battery Anode Material) manufacturing project, which is a graphite concentration operation within the company’s flagship Siviour graphite project in South Australia.

It’s capital injection into a promising Australian upstream graphite mine and concentrator facility, essentially.

The BAM project combines the Siviour Graphite Deposit in South Australia, the largest reported graphite reserve outside of Africa, and a state-of-the-art processing facility, with the objective of manufacturing purified spherical graphite – “through Renascor’s eco-friendly purification process” no less.

It’s a critical minerals narrative. It’s a battery metals narrative.

Spherical graphite, you see, is battery-grade graphite, and is used specifically for anodes in lithium-ion batteries.

“Renascor Resources will deliver the sustainable and ethically sourced production of Australian-made purified graphite, for use in lithium-ion batteries required for electric vehicles and renewable technologies,” reads the government release.

Here’s what PM Albo himself had to say about it all:

“We are building a future made in Australia with secure jobs in our regions. Today we are demonstrating what that means here in Gladstone and in South Australia.

“The global race for new jobs and new opportunities is on. Our Government wants Australia to be in it to win it.

“These two critical minerals projects will help secure good and secure jobs in manufacturing, and clean, reliable energy.”

Want some more commentary from gov-bod suits? Read the release because they’re all frothing hard for the Made in Oz critical battery metal narrative.

One more for good measure so you don’t actually have to sift through the release? Really? Ah go on then, here’s a quote attributable to Minister for Resources, Madeleine King:

“Australia’s critical minerals and rare earths are key to building renewable technologies such solar panels, batteries and wind farms, as well as defence and medical technologies.

“The road to net zero runs through Australia’s resources sector.”

Lithium price action

Back to the leading battery metal for a minute or two, then. And what’s the commodity pricing telling us? Flatness for the Chinese-data-led LCT price, according to Lithium Price Bot.

But at least, as full-time lithium analyst Jua Carlos Zuleta notes below, it’s looking “much better than yesterday’s” price action, which saw it fall about 1.11%.

Independent Canadian research positive on lithium

Here’s something. A new report put together by independent Canadian research outfit Adamas Intelligence, which specialises in critical minerals analysis, that forecasts growing positivity for the lithium market.

Lithium market to see growing structural imbalance through Q4

“Our analysis expects a small structural deficit in Q2 2024, growing to more pronounced volumes in Q3 and Q4 as end-user demand ramps up,”

Source: Adamas Intelligencehttps://t.co/WoHie9QlW7 pic.twitter.com/U4AuWkvEqi

— Thematica (@Thematicafunds) April 17, 2024

Some of the thesis, then, emphasises:

A reversing of the oversupplied lithium market trending to “deficits from Q3 2024 due to seasonal demand pull, which fundamentally, should see prices rise in this timeframe”.

• Supply chain inventory analysis: “Although China’s lithium inventories have now normalized, cathode stores are at particularly low levels which may precipitate further buying pressure.”

Growing EV demand building LCE (lithium carbonate equivalent) demand in Q2 2024: “Led by a projected 40% rise in passenger EV sales this year (including HEVs) and a 6% rise in average pack capacity, we expect a 48% increase in LCE demand from the sector in 2024.”
