Closing Bell: ASX dragged down by ex-divvy stocks as banks take lead; Gold’s rally relentless

Estimated read time 9 min read

The ASX 200 lifted modestly by +0.2% on Thursday as gains in Tech and Industrial stocks were offset by losses in Energy.

Local traders brushed out dovish comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell last night. Appearing before Congress, Powell reiterated the possibility of a rate cut some time this year.

“We expect inflation to come down, the economy to keep growing. If that’s the case, it will be appropriate for interest rates to come down significantly over the coming years,” he said.

To stocks, bank shares were mainly higher after a flurry of credit upgrades from Moody’s Investors Service.

Westpac (ASX:WBC), ANZ (ASX:ANZ), Macquarie Group (ASX:MQG) and Bank of Queensland (ASX:BOQ) all got upgrades from Moody’s, while the Commonwealth Bank (ASX:CBA) hit its all-time highs.

A handful of mining heavyweights like BHP (ASX:BHP), Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) dropped as they went ex-dividends today – see more below.

Bullion meanwhile shows no signs of easing, leaping further to trade at US$2,151.65 after hitting record highs last night.

Bitcoin, however, eased back a little, trading now at US$65,980, after trading at above US$67k for most of the session.

Good news from China

Finally, some hood news out of China.

The country reported that its exports have grown much faster than expected in the first two months of 2024.

According to data from Bloomberg, overseas shipments in USD terms rose 7.1% in the January-February period compared to the pcp.

Beijing is targeting economic growth of around 5% this year, a goal that’s been called ‘over ambitious’ and met with skepticism.
