Gold recovers US$2k after weak retail sales data gets thrown into the economic soup in America
Moneybags former hedge fund bloke Stanley Druckenmiller is increasing his gold exposure
The week’s best performing ASX goldies include: TG1, TGM, GSR
Gold is down a tad from this time last week, but that obviously doesn’t tell the full story.
The precious yellow one has actually reclaimed the pyschological level of US$2,000, having dipped below it on Valentine’s Day for the first time since mid-December.
Guess Valentines with jewellery expectations got silver instead.
The price of gold is presently changing hands for US$2,008 per ounce and $3,082 of our plastic-fantastic Aussie bucks.
Gold’s recovery can partly be put down to some crappy retail sales data that came out in the US late this week. According to the US Census Bureau, retail sales are down by 0.8% against the consensus of 0.1%.
This weaker-than-anticipated data has fallen in line with the US monetary policy doves… the dove-bulls if you will. Basically those hoping to see the US Federal Reserve pull the shears out and start cutting interest rates sooner than later. And that’s most of us – at least anyone with a shares portfolio.
This fresh, data-driven narrative is also partly why the S&P 500 and Nasdaq is back in the green again overnight.
And just quickly, here’s something from Stockhead’s RIU resources conference reporting over in Perth this week. Per Michael “Washy” Washbourne:
Gold is tipped to have a good year, just ask ABC Refinery’s Nicholas Frappell, but the question remains whether the market has gained enough of an appetite for the precious metal.
Speaking at the RIU Explorers conference in Perth yesterday, Frappell – ABC Refinery’s global head of institutional markets – could not have been more positive on the outlook for gold in 2024 and beyond.
“It’s tangible, it’s debt-free, it’s liquid, it’s simple to understand and it’s got a great history,” he said.
“Gold should enjoy continued support this coming year.
“Investors in the west are underweight in gold, so they can bring more ammunition to the party should the gold price rise.”

Washy’s key bullet points, though:
Outlook for gold is strong for 2024 and exploration companies are looking to take advantage
Companies such as De Grey Mining and Spartan Resources have been rewarded for game-changing gold discoveries in recent years
Aspiring miners Brightstar Resources and Magnetic Resources set for pivotal years with key studies due in the coming weeks and months
Now, briefly back to the US, which is “still the world’s economic locomotive”, as Frappell put it in his RIU presso. This is making news, too. In fact, we’re second-hand sourcing it but headlining it.
Partly because “Druckenmiller” is just such a damned arresting name.
Druckenmiller goes for gold
As reported by the gold-loving Kitco media outlet over in Canada, renowned US billionaire investor and former hedge fund manager Stanley Druckenmiller has been pulling back from tech and ecommerce sectors and making moves into metals – chiefly certain gold stocks.
According to fresh F-13 regulatory filings, Druckenmiller’s Duquesne Family Office dumped its holdings in Google’s Alphabet, Alibaba Group and Amazon in the fourth quarter of 2023.
The same filings show he’s moved some of that money into 1.76 million shares of Barrick Gold – the largest gold producer in the States, and 474,000 shares of Newmont Mining, another absolute beast of an American gold miner – and, in fact the world’s largest mining company.
The billionaire’s family office also increased exposure to Teck Resources, a Canadian diversified mining company, which has an Ontario gold operation.
In any case, it’s a big, famous billionaire making a bet on the yellow metal, which is always worthy of a headline.
Like Frappell in his RIU speech to investors, Kitco is citing very strong central bank demand, the likelihood of the Fed cutting interest rates this year, as well as geopolitical uncertainty as a potpourri of factors that are giving off a decent scent for gold bugs this year.
“Many analysts expect that gold prices will eventually rally to new all-time highs as the Federal Reserve eventually cuts interest rates and embarks on a new easing cycle. Analysts have noted that in this environment, mining companies should eventually outperform the precious metal,” added Neils Christensen for Kitco.
