Sentiment in the junior mining and exploration space is improving after years in the doldrums

\u201cThe mining sector, and particularly exploration, has started to come back to life after a terrible two years in the doldrums,\u201d says James Chirnside, managing director at April Top 50 winner Dart Mining (ASX:DTR)<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThe outlook for metals, both precious and industrials, looks very constructive with tightening supply against a backdrop of forecast higher demand,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n \u201cIn some ways we could be approaching the perfect storm in terms of higher prices and profitability for miners across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n Couldn\u2019t have said it better. April was the first time in a long time that most metals and commodity prices gained as one.<\/p>\n Astounding, says Josh Chiat.<\/a><\/p>\n While the broad-based rally comes too late for bankrupt miners Galena Mining (ASX:G1A)<\/a> (lead, silver), Austral Resources (ASX:AR1)<\/a> (copper) and most of WA\u2019s nickel sulphide cohort, sentiment amongst investors more generally is on the improve.<\/p>\n Commodity prices are moving higher driven by the following: \u2014 Jesse Felder (@jessefelder) April 25, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n\n Still, it\u2019s hard for many investors to shift away from a defensive mindset in the face of an emerging boom market.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is always at the top and the bottom of the market cycles that investors have difficulty in adjusting to the new ground rules,\u201d says Warwick Grigor, veteran stock picker at Far East Capital.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the peak of a trend they see falls in markets as corrections rather than the beginning of the bear market. It is not until many share prices have fallen by 20% that they start to take it seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n The inverse psychology dominates the bottoming out of the market, Grigor says.<\/p>\n \u201cThat, and the fact that portfolios and investable capital have shrunk dramatically makes many investors defensive and unable to recognise the opportunities before them,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n \u201cIt becomes more of a watching game and will remain so until it becomes obvious what they have missed out on.<\/p>\n \u201cThen, eventually, FOMO will kick in and the whole cycle starts again.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Scroll or swipe to reveal table. Amazing stuff.<\/p>\n \u2018What\u2019s niobium?\u2019 everyone asked at the time, including us.<\/p>\n Well, now we know.<\/p>\n Current global production of ferroniobium\u2013 mostly used to strengthen steel, but also in high-performance alloys and emerging technologies \u2013 is just under 100,000tpa from a handful of operations globally.<\/p>\n But it fetches over US$45\/kg.<\/p>\n The word \u2018discovery\u2019 is bandied around far too loosely by exploration stocks, but the Luni deposit has potential to be one of the best niobium mines globally.<\/p>\n WA1\u2019s ongoing success \u2013 hyped by brokers like Argonaut and Cannacord \u2014 is a boon for surrounding explorers, which hope to find a Luni of their own.<\/p>\n At least five stocks in our top 50 are West Arunta explorers.<\/p>\n Rincon Resources (ASX:RCR)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0tops the lot after uncovering a \u2018bullseye\u2019 target at its project \u00a0\u201cof similar size and character\u201d to\u00a0the<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Luni carbonatite, and IOCG deposits like Prominent Hill and Ernest Henry.<\/p>\n Lycaon Resources (ASX:LYN)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0now has final permission to drill its Stansmore project, a proverbial stone\u2019s throw from WA1.<\/p>\n To the south of WA1, explorer \u00a0Norwest Minerals (ASX:NWM)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 has a large project called Arunta West, where a ground gravity survey on tenement E80\/5031 to find IOCG, carbonatite, kimberlite and other critical mineral drill targets has just been finalised.<\/p>\n Then there\u2019s Encounter Resources (ASX:ENR)<\/a>, which is backing up early drilling success with a massive 20,000m drilling program starting early May at its Aileron project.<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n The post Who made the Gains?
