{"id":8141,"date":"2024-04-09T06:36:15","date_gmt":"2024-04-09T06:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=8141"},"modified":"2024-04-09T06:36:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-09T06:36:15","slug":"monsters-of-rock-iron-ore-and-gold-roll-higher-but-goldman-sachs-still-says-dont-get-too-excited-about-lithium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=8141","title":{"rendered":"Monsters of Rock: Iron ore and gold roll higher, but Goldman Sachs still says don\u2019t get too excited about lithium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Materials was a big winner today, up ~1.7%<br \/>\nS&amp;P\/ASX 300 Metals and Mining index continues to rebound strongly from mid-March lows<br \/>\nIron ore, gold make gains; lithium miners also got a nudge, despite a dour research note from Goldman Sachs<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Big miners have lifted the bourse today.<\/p>\n<p>Materials was a big winner, up ~1.7% near close thanks to some strong gains from iron ore behemoths <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/rio-tinto-rio\/\"><strong>Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO)<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/bhp-bhp\/\"><strong>BHP (ASX:BHP)<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/fortescue-fmg\/\"><strong>Fortescue (ASX:FMG)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P\/ASX 300 Metals and Mining index, up ~1.8% for the day, continues to rebound strongly from mid-March lows.<\/p>\n\n<p><span class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mining stocks were up as much as 2.3% to hit their highest level since Feb 5, backing on rising iron ore and copper prices. Shares of Rio Tinto <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24RIO&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$RIO<\/a>, Fortescue <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24FMG&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$FMG<\/a> and BHP Group <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%24BHP&amp;src=ctag&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">$BHP<\/a> advanced between 2.6% and 3.5%.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 CommSec (@CommSec) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CommSec\/status\/1777508338617696522?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 9, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>Iron ore futures climbed $US2.71 or 2.7% to $US102.68 a tonne on Monday, \u201cbuoyed by hopes of potential measures to bolster the steel industry in China and expectations of a wave of post-holiday restocking from the country\u2019s steelmakers\u201d, according to CommSec.<\/p>\n<p>Copper looks strong, while gold and silver prices continue to push into record territory.<\/p>\n<p>Lithium miners also got a nudge, despite a dour research note from Goldman Sachs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026 the recent rally in lithium prices should not be interpreted as the end of the bear market, where further supply rationing is needed to reduce both the 2024E surplus and now larger surplus in 2025E,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile lithium chemicals forward curves remain in contango, we note that lithium chemicals futures have largely been in contango for most of the price decline from early 2023, so far making them a poor predictor of spot pricing,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Contango\u2019 occurs when futures contract (buy later) prices rise above spot (buy now) prices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilarly, while recent lithium auctions have also brought improving near-term sector sentiment (with some market volume additions 2H weighted), we note announced cargo sales through March make up less than 1% of out CY24E global spodumene volumes and less than 0.5% of total lithium supply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In March,<a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/pilbara-minerals-pls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS)<\/a> injected some sentiment into the market after accepting a pre-auction offer for 5000t of 5.5% Li2O con at US$1106\/t, equivalent to US$1200\/t for the benchmark 6% stuff (SC6).<\/p>\n<p>That was well above SC6 spot prices of ~US$950\/t. Fellow major Albemarle also sold its own spodumene via auction at a substantial premium.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, GS has a big \u2018For Sale\u2019 sign on PLS, mothballed miner <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/core-lithium-cxo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Core Lithium (ASX:CXO)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/mineral-resources-min\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mineral Resources (ASX:MIN)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It continues to see<a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/igo-limited-igo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> IGO (ASX:IGO)<\/a> as a buy \u201con valuation\/FCF, with increasing corporate positioning for lower lithium prices for longer (reaffirmed by our recent Perth trip)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Today\u2019s Best Miners <\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/liontown-resources-ltr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Liontown (ASX:LTR)<\/strong><\/a> (lithium) +8%<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/red-5-limited-red\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Red 5 (ASX:RED)<\/strong><\/a> (gold) +6.4%<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/lynas-lyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lynas (ASX:LYC)<\/strong><\/a> (rare earths) +4.6%<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/whitehaven-coal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Whitehaven Coal (ASX:WHC)<\/strong> <\/a>(coal) +4%<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/rio-tinto-rio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO)<\/strong> <\/a>(iron ore, diversified) +3.4%<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/igo-limited-igo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>IGO (ASX:IGO)<\/strong> <\/a>(nickel, lithium) +3.35%<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Today\u2019s Worst Miners <\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/newmont-corporation-nem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Newmont (ASX:NEM)<\/strong><\/a> (gold) -1.2%<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/westgold-resources-wgx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Westgold Resources (ASX:WGX)<\/strong><\/a> (gold) -3.3%<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Monstar Share Prices Today:<\/h2>\n\n<p><span class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>1.5Moz at Spartans \u2018Never Never\u2019 could be conservative<\/h2>\n<p>The turnaround story of 2023,<a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/spartan-resources-spr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Spartan Resources (ASX:SPR)<\/a>, continues to surpass expectations in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Shallow, high grade gold at its game changing +950koz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/resources\/the-never-never-discovery-is-unique-spartans-high-grade-gold-resources-to-deliver-big-share-price-upside-brokers-say\/\">Never Never discovery at Dalgaranga<\/a>, all within 2km of the processing plant, has propelled the former failed miner ~500% over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>Canaccord Genuity recently estimated Never Never could host +1.5Moz of gold, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/resources\/drilling-proves-spartans-never-never-can-indeed-get-better-as-brokers-set-sky-high-share-price-targets\/\">\u201cassuming mineralisation extends ~200m below the current resource\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>That could be conservative.
