{"id":5767,"date":"2024-02-13T05:59:59","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T05:59:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=5767"},"modified":"2024-02-13T05:59:59","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T05:59:59","slug":"closing-bell-big-caps-get-whacked-on-asx-day-of-the-earnings-miss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=5767","title":{"rendered":"Closing Bell: Big caps get whacked on ASX Day of the Earnings Miss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>ASX200 ends lower on bad corporate reveals<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The falling Healthcare Sector remains CSL\u2019s slave<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Small cap winners led by Ansarda<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A big day for blue chip earnings reports has led the Australian sharemarket all over the shop and eventually lower, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>At 4.15pm on February 13, the S&amp;P\/ASX200 was down 11 points or 0.15% to <span class=\"IsqQVc NprOob wT3VGc\">7,603.6:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Via Google<\/p>\n<p>In good, bad and confusing news, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/national-australia-bank-nab\/\"><strong>National Australia Bank (ASX:NAB)<\/strong><\/a> chief economist Alan Oster reckons we should brace for an \u201congoing easing in price pressures across the economy in early 2024\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Which is surely now.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t worry about assuming the brace position \u2013 because he also warns that interest rates will \u2013 \u201cremain high for much of the year\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And that \u201cprice pressures are still a concern against a raft of global uncertainty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Business confidence remained \u201cvery weak\u201d amid \u201congoing pressures across the economy\u201d, and cost growth that was \u201cstill high notwithstanding some easing\u201d in the later half of last year.<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth profitability and trading conditions are now below average with conditions supported somewhat by still above-average employment conditions,\u201d Mnsr Oster says.<\/p>\n<p>Now. If none of this makes any congruent sense it\u2019s because I\u2019m basically trying to explain what it means when NAB\u2019s Aussie business conditions fall by 2 points to 6 index points \u2013 just below the long-term average (of 7), as per the bank\u2019s Monthly Business Survey.<\/p>\n<p>But that makes little sense either, regardless of how much I wish to support the monthly effort which seems laudable if misdirected.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/westpac-wbc\/\"><strong>Westpac (ASX:WBC)<\/strong><\/a> has the smarts to share the burden of the monthly Westpac-Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment index, which you\u2019ll be pleased to know has risen in February by 6.2% to 86.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a 20-month high for sentiment which the bank puts down to \u201cmajor purchases\u201d and \u201cyear-ahead expectations\u201d. Both aided by the sweet anticipation of easing inflation and the accompanying interest rate cuts.<\/p>\n<p>What about sentiment and Stage 3 tax cuts? Well, they were also a positive\u2026 but a \u201cmore uneven one,\u201d according to Westpac senior economist, Matthew Hassan, who adds that all up, the average mood of the Aussie consumer \u201cremains pessimistic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Meanwhile, back on the Death Star\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Han and Chewie spent the afternoon weighing a raft of uninspiring results from across the galaxy of ASX200 stars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/seek-sek\/\"><strong>Seek (ASX:SEK)<\/strong><\/a> , Macquarie Group, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/breville-brg\/\"><strong>Breville (ASX:BRG)<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/james-hardie-jhx\/\"><strong>James Hardie (ASX:JHX)<\/strong><\/a> and ongoing headaches from market giant <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/csl-csl\/\"><strong>CSL (ASX:CSL)<\/strong><\/a> weighed on the bourse.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, for those willing to relive the moment, the benchmark was dragged down by as much as 0.55% after the blood plasma giant revealed its CSL112 drug for heart attack patients failed a phase-three drug trial.<\/p>\n<p>Today the big fella kept bleeding, giving up almost 4%.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in investment bank <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/macquarie-group-mqg\/\"><strong>Macquarie Group (ASX:MQG)<\/strong><\/a> also dropped about 2% after delivering a substantially lower Q3 net profit.<\/p>\n<p>In typically unapologetic Macquarie-style language \u201cexceptionally strong results\u201d over the prior corresponding period (pcp) from the Commodities business and lower fee and commission income for Macquarie Capital were behind MQG\u2019s decline in third quarter net profit contribution, the bank said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Macquarie also lost its highest-paid banker, Nicholas O\u2019Kane, who will exit the investment bank at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/jb-hifi-jbh\/\"><strong>JB HiFi (ASX:JBH)<\/strong><\/a> has led retailers out the gate, up over 6% after robust earnings.<\/p>\n<p>Other big names with big gains \u2013 building materials giants <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/boral-bld\/\"><strong>Boral (ASX:BLD)<\/strong><\/a> up 2% and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/idp-education-iel\/\"><strong>IDP Education (ASX:IEL)<\/strong><\/a>, up 3%.<\/p>\n<p>In the doghouse is James Hardie, after warning of more uncertain housing conditions ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Other hella disappointing corporate updates include the near 10% drop for SEK, bettered only be Breville\u2019s 11% crash.<\/p>\n<p>In random Tuesday happy news, the global private equity group CapVest Partners has come swooping down upon the local Virtual Data Room problem solver <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/ansarada-and\/\"><strong>Ansarada (ASX:AND)<\/strong><\/a> , which says it\u2019s all in for a proposed $236.3mn takeover.<\/p>\n<p>Stock in the sassy Aussie SaaS has gone nuts after announcing to the bourse its intention to walk right into a scheme of implementation deed with a CapVest Partners set up called Datasite\u2026 \u201cto acquire 100% of the fully diluted share capital in Ansarada at $2.50 cash per share, which implies an equity value of A$236.3 million and represents a premium of 19.0% to the last closing price of A$2.10 per share\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At the sector level, Utilities gained, but couldn\u2019t nearly offset the hell that is Healthcare while CSL sinks.<\/p>\n<p>Both the ASX small ordinaries (XSO) and the (XEC) emerging companies index were in the green.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>ASX Sectors on Tuesday<\/h2>\n\n<p><em>Via MarketIndex<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Meanwhile, in the States\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to Bespoke Investment Group, the S&amp;P500 has now gone over 70 trading days without a single 2% decline. The only way, despite what Yazz told us, is not up. So try to remember that pullbacks and corrections are real.<\/p>\n<p>Any old hoo, last night it was time for the Dow Jones Industrial Average to clock a new high, with the 30-stock index rising 0.33%, to close above 38,797 for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P500 dropped 0.1% and the tech heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 0.3%.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, US sectors were mixed on Monday. Utilities was the best performer whilst the Tech sector was the worst.<\/p>\n<p>In corporate action not related too much to the Magnificent Seven, Diamondback Energy rose near 10% after announcing plans to acquire oil and gas producer Endeavor Energy Partners in a US$26bn shake up.<\/p>\n<p>Diamondback, which was valued at $27bn before the deal was announced, had been vying for weeks with the much larger Conoco to buy the shale oil producer.<\/p>\n<p>The cash and stock deal will instantly make the Texas-based Diamondback one of the majors to poke about in the Permian Basin across Texas and New Mexico, the biggest US oilfield.<\/p>\n<p>On the flipside, Salesforce dragged with the cloud-based software stock sliding 1.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of Hershey slipped less than 1 per cent following a downgrade to underweight from Morgan Stanley on the back of softer caramel. Sorry, demand.<\/p>\n<p>Some 61 names in the S&amp;P 500 are set to report earnings this week including gig economy stocks Lyft, Instacart and DoorDash.<\/p>\n<p>Kraft Heinz, Hasbro and Coca-Cola will also be exciting \u2013 and handy tells for what the US consumer is up to.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight in the US investors will be gripping their bookmakers as the US consumer price index (CPI) drops.<\/p>\n<p>Other key inflationary reads stateside this week range from January retail sales, imports and exports, housing starts and the producer price index, (PPI).<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin just clocked over US$50k for the first time in about 26 months. The wonder drug hit $50,334.00, its highest level since December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Ether is also rising.
