ASX lithium stocks few and far between in green today
\nCheer up, though, big Aussie stockbroking and wealth management firm Morgans spies a bottom\u2026 probably
\nAsra up 20% at least on strong quarterly reporting form. CTN and GSM also travelling well<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fun times to be writing this<\/em> column, eh?<\/p>\n

You probs don\u2019t need a reminder that lithium \u201cspot\u201d pricing has tanked more than 85% over the past 12 months after rivers of white gold, rainbows, unicorns and outsized gains in 2021 to late 2022.<\/p>\n

Consequently, bottom searching has become a favourite pastime for lithium heads and other interested parties.<\/p>\n

And here\u2019s an interested party \u2013 \u201cAustralia\u2019s largest national full-service retail stockbroking and wealth management firm\u201d, Morgans.<\/p>\n

Amid the lithium rout, the broker yesterday nominated two lithium stocks it rates a buy\u00a0 right now: Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS)<\/strong><\/a>, Mineral Resources (ASX:MIN)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

And one, a cautious hold:\u00a0Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Okay, no shockers there, really.<\/p>\n

Morgans notes that PLS \u201chas the second best hard rock lithium mine in the world and a strong balance sheet\u201d which positions it well to weather the current storm.<\/p>\n

MinRes, meanwhile offers \u201cattractive diversified lithium exposure\u201d, says Morgans, with \u201cstrengthening contributions from iron ore and mining services\u201d partly offsetting lower lithium earnings.<\/p>\n

Liontown, Morgans says, \u201cdoes hold attractive leverage in a lithium recovery scenario through Kathleen Valley\u201d. But it remains cautious \u201cgiven the funding hurdles the company is now working through\u201d.<\/p>\n

Overall<\/em>, though \u2013 here\u2019s the firm\u2019s outlook we\u2019ve jumped on for our bottoming-out headline.<\/p>\n

While gloomy lithium forecasts have re-based near-term earnings expectations significantly lower, says Morgans, with further weakness a possibility, it views \u201cthe downcycle as largely played out, presenting some attractive opportunities\u201d.<\/p>\n

So you\u2019re telling us there\u2019s a chance\u2026\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Well, further to this, Morgans added:<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately the lower spot prices push, the more severe the resulting supply response will become. And as a further consequence, the stronger the future recovery will have to be once demand conditions recover in order to induce new supply from a heavily damaged lithium industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur base case is nowhere near that severe, instead we expect lithium prices are nearing a floor, with the current rapid decline likely to moderate this half.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, as Eddy \u201cMarket Highlights\u201d Sunarto informed us early doors today:<\/p>\n

\u201cLithium stocks on the ASX are on watch today after BofA analyst, Michael Widmer<\/em>, slashed his forecast for spodumene prices \u2013 by -63% in 2024 and -34% in 2025 \u2013 citing waning demand for electric vehicles.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s that at play, plus some hawkish tone from Fed boss Jerome Powell overnight, too.<\/p>\n

Powell said while the Fed\u2019s interest rate target is \u201clikely at its peak for this tightening cycle\u201d, \u201cwe are not declaring victory, we think we still have a way to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s likely that the committee will reach a level of confidence by the time of the March meeting,\u201d Powell added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we get very strong inflation data, and it kicks back up then we\u2019ll go slower or later.\u201d<\/p>\n
