{"id":4704,"date":"2024-01-22T05:20:20","date_gmt":"2024-01-22T05:20:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=4704"},"modified":"2024-01-22T05:20:20","modified_gmt":"2024-01-22T05:20:20","slug":"asx-large-caps-asx-closes-higher-despite-selloff-in-lithium-stocks-liontown-crashes-20pc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=4704","title":{"rendered":"ASX Large Caps: ASX closes higher despite selloff in lithium stocks; Liontown crashes 20pc"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ASX up around half percent, after S&amp;P 500 hit record high on Friday<br \/>\nLiontown down -20pc on deepening trouble in the lithium sector<br \/>\nSouth32 and Lynas down after releasing quarterly production reports<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Aussie shares were up by around 0.5%, tracking a big rally in New York on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>S&amp;P 500 surged by more than 1% to a record high<\/strong>, buoyed by increasing bets and hopes of a soft economic landing.<\/p>\n<p>The US market also benefitted from a sentiment lift from the <strong>semiconductor sector<\/strong>, following another positive outlook statement, this time from server manufacturer, <em>Super Micro Computer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuch more good than bad news in the underlying economic data as we enter 2024, with inflation cooling,\u201d said Art Hogan at B Riley Wealth.<\/p>\n<p>On the ASX today, the benchmark ASX 200 index was led by <strong>Consumer Discretionary<\/strong> and<strong> Staple<\/strong> sectors, while the\u00a0 <strong>Mining<\/strong> sector closed in the red.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/liontown-resources-ltr\/\">Liowntown (ASX:LTR)<\/a><\/strong> crashed by -20% after lenders pulled out a $760m loan promise to the company.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>See more below, and read this: <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/resources\/ground-breakers-liontown-chalice-tighten-the-belt-in-another-rough-morning-for-battery-metals-backers\/\">Liontown, Chalice, Wyloo tighten the belt in another rough morning for battery metals backers<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other lithium stocks, including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/sayona-mining-sya\/\">Sayona Mining (ASX:SYA)<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/mineral-resources-min\/\">Mineral Resources\u00a0(ASX:MIN)<\/a><\/strong> also sold off.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, oil prices were also trading in the red this afternoon as OPEC member Libya restarted production from its largest field.<\/p>\n<p>And across the region, Asian stock markets trimmed early gains but were mostly in the green at the time of writing.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>BIG CAP WINNERS<\/h2>\n<p><em>Swipe or scroll to reveal the full table. Metallurgical coal production tumbled 35%. Zinc and manganese output each declined by 5%. Lead and silver production increased by 12% and 20% respectively.<\/p>\n<p>S32 said its H1 FY24 operating unit costs are expected to be in line or below FY24 guidance for the majority of its operations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/lynas-lyc\/\">Lynas Rare Earths (ASX:LYC)<\/a><\/strong> also dropped after posting its quarterly activities.<\/p>\n<p>Lynas said it produced 1566t of REO during the December quarter 2023, against 3609t for the previous quarter, and 4457t in the pcp.<\/p>\n<p>Sales revenue tallied $112.5n against $128.1m and $232.7m respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The average selling price came in at $28.7\/kg from $47.4\/kg and $58.4\/kg respectively, while output was impacted by an upgrade-related shutdown of its facility in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"et_bloom_bottom_trigger\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The post <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/news\/asx-large-caps-asx-closes-higher-despite-selloff-in-lithium-stocks-liontown-crashes-20pc\/\">ASX Large Caps: ASX closes higher despite selloff in lithium stocks;
