{"id":4384,"date":"2024-01-15T05:52:01","date_gmt":"2024-01-15T05:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=4384"},"modified":"2024-01-15T05:52:01","modified_gmt":"2024-01-15T05:52:01","slug":"closing-bell-monday-on-a-flat-asx-was-cruel-and-unusual-cept-for-uranium-stocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=4384","title":{"rendered":"Closing Bell: Monday on a flat ASX was cruel and unusual, \u2018cept for uranium stocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><strong>ASX200 closes 2 points down, flatter than a ginger ale at your local RSL<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ASX sectors dominated by Energy, up 2.11pc on rumblings of a uranium shortage<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Small cap winners led by uranium stocks, because of \u2018see above\u2019<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ASX benchmark has closed a painfully ironic, or perhaps uraniumic two points short of parity on Monday, despite a stellar performance from the Energy Sector which surged a magnificent 2.11% on an awfully dull wicket.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>At 4.15pm on Monday, the S&amp;P\/ASX200 closed down just 2.00 points Monday to 7,496.30.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Via Google<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the chart above shows in the garish colours of the Parramatta Eels, local gold stocks had a decent day out on the back of a terrifying weekend of geopolitics.<\/p>\n<p>Even better considering that among the worst of the worst today \u2013 or at least the least performing stocks in the top 200 \u2013 bigger cap goldie <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/chalice-gold-mines-chn\/\"><strong>Chalice Gold Mines (ASX:CHN)<\/strong><\/a> down 8.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last five sessions of (now) fruitless toil, the benchmark index is virtually unchanged, but is currently 1.8% below its 12 month high.<\/p>\n<p>The gold spot meanwhile, eased beyond $2,050 an ounce during the Monday session.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Via TradingEconomics<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The safe-haven surged for a 3rd straight day as escalating tensions in the Middle East drove punters back to safe-haven heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Australian, Dutch and a few other mung beans were led by US and British forces to lob a few rocket strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen to apparently infuriate the region, bolster support for the Iran-Houti alliance and secure further vows not to stop threatening shipping in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n<p>The Energy Sector was boosted from all corners on Monday. Oil and uranium prices were higher and local stocks enjoyed other tailwinds to maximise the sector\u2019s returns.<\/p>\n<p>The former lithium explorer <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/white-cliff-minerals-wcn\/\"><strong>White Cliff Minerals (ASX:WCN)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0announced plans to acquire a historical uranium project in the Northwest Territories of Canada called Radium Point.<\/p>\n<p>The Iron Oxide Copper Gold Uranium (IOCGU) plus silver operation produced 13.7Mlb uranium, plus silver, copper gold, nickel and lead pre-1982.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/legacy-of-canadas-role-in-atomic-bomb-is-felt-by-northern-indigenous-community-143524\">this obscure document<\/a>, that deputy editor Reuben Adams killed 7 men to get a hold of, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/legacy-of-canadas-role-in-atomic-bomb-is-felt-by-northern-indigenous-community-143524\">Port Radium provided 11% of all the uranium used in the Manhattan project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/resources\/resources-top-2-and-the-rest-the-gains-are-here-11-uranium-stocks-hit-20pc-in-early-trade\/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Lunchtime%20-01-14-2024&amp;utm_content=httpsstockheadcomauresourcesresourcestop2andtherestthegainsarehere11uraniumstockshit20pcinearlytrade&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=ASX%20Lunch%20Wrap%20Monday%20January%2015&amp;utm_content=ASX%20Lunch%20Wrap%20Monday%20January%2015+CID_76fc966e3d4cd4472788f59602fc8af1&amp;utm_source=Campaign%20Monitor&amp;utm_term=Resources%20Top%202%20and%20the%20rest%20The%20gains%20are%20here%2011%20uranium%20stocks%20hit%2020pc%20in%20early%20trade\">Reubs says, in typically phine gernalism<\/a> that the $16m capped WCN, is now looking to divest various Australian assets. It was up a casual 30% in early Monday trade.<\/p>\n<p>Companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/global-uranium-enrichment-gue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Global Uranium and Enrichment (ASX:GUE)<\/strong><\/a> gained in the double digits combining \u2013 GUE offloaded its 80% stake in the Maggie Hays Hill lithium project for $2.1m in cash and shares to <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/intra-energy-iec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Intra Energy (ASX:IEC),<\/strong><\/a> while other traders just went the full speculation in names like <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/enrg-elements-eel\/\"><strong>ENRG Elements (ASX:EEL)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Brent and WTI prices were up 2% last week, building on the 3% of the previous week.<\/p>\n<p>Cashing in this time was blue chip Santos with a win in the Federal Court for progressing its key $5.3bn Barossa LNG project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/santos-sto\/\"><strong>Santos (ASX:STO)<\/strong><\/a> has been banking on the Barossa development with a lot of that goodwill baked into STO\u2019s mid-term share price.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>ASX SECTORS at 4pm on MONDAY<\/h2>\n\n<p><em>Via MarketIndex<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the US, Wall Street ended the Friday session mixed and muddled after (PPI) the Producer Prices Index unexpectedly declined 0.1% month-over-month during December, upending a lot of pent up emotion around US inflation, in flamed after the previous day\u2019s higher than expected CPI and thumbing its nose at market forecasts of a 0.1% rise.<\/p>\n<p>The major averages ended with the Dow short some 0.31%, while the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq Composite inched up 0.08% and 0.02%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The inflation data \u2013 dropping amid the initial big bank reports for earnings Q4 \u2013 would seem to contradict the 24 hours of living again with rising CPI results and rekindled, renewed, reinvigorated <em>and<\/em> reanimated momentarily dormant hopes for the gradual convergence of inflation towards the US Fed\u2019s target of blah blah blah \u2026 you\u2019ve stopped listening, haven\u2019t you?<\/p>\n<p>In short \u2013 Wall Street traders are still wrestling with inflation and looks like doing it for some time when trade again begins after tonight\u2019s public holiday.<\/p>\n<p>For now, US stock futures are slightly higher in holiday-thinned trade as most traders were out for\u00a0 Martin Luther King Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>ASX SMALL CAP LEADERS<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s best performing small cap stocks:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Swipe or scroll to reveal full table.
