ASX closes higher on the first trading day of 2024 finishing at record high
\nEnergy leads the markets higher with all sectors in green except real estate
\nEnergy stocks top big cap gainers including Boss Energy\u00a0 and Yancoal Australia\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The S&P ASX200 is up for the first day of 2024 trading, closing 0.47% higher and setting a new 100-day high of 7,626.50 points. Over the past five trading days, the index has gained 1.66% and is currently 0.08% off its 52-week high.<\/p>\n

The ASX was able to shake off a 0.3% drop in Friday\u2019s S&P 500, buoyed by a modest uptick in US futures. While at lunch time all sectors were in the green, by close real estate had fallen into the red to end down 0.54%.<\/p>\n

Commonwealth Bank (ASX:CBA)<\/strong><\/a> was up 1.4% today to set a new record high of $113.36, while Super Retail Group (ASX:SUL)<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Ventia Services (ASX:VNT)<\/strong><\/a> and Viva Energy (ASX:VEA) <\/strong><\/a>were also among stocks to\u00a0hit record highs in trade today.<\/p>\n

Energy was leading the market higher followed by discretionary and financials. Healthcare, staples and utilities\u00a0 were also off to a strong 2024 start.<\/p>\n

The Aussie bourse was feeling optimistic following a weekend national address from China\u2019s President Xi Jinping, who committed to boosting economic growth and employment following a challenging year.<\/p>\n

Jinping emphasised China\u2019s focus on reinforcing the progress in economic recovery and pursuing stable, sustained economic development.<\/p>\n

AGL Energy (ASX:AGL)<\/strong><\/a>, New Hope Corp (ASX:NHC)<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0Paladin Energy (ASX:PDN)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 were also on today\u2019s winners list.<\/p>\n

Abacus Group (ASX:ABG)<\/strong><\/a> and its spinoff Abacus Storage King (ASX:ASK)<\/strong><\/a> were both on the losers list today on no specific news.<\/p>\n

However, ABG recently announced<\/a> that seven\u00a0investment properties, or 37% of the group\u2019s portfolio by number, have been externally valued as at December 31 2023.<\/p>\n

Preliminary draft valuations (including both internal and external valuations)\u00a0 resulted in a total estimated decrease of $140 million, being a 6.5% decrease on prior book values for the six months to 31 December 2023.<\/p>\n
