Momentum trading involves betting that the stock market\u2019s recent winners will remain winners in the near term.<\/p>\n
The strategy uses the strength of stock price movements as a foundation to open positions, seeking to use momentum to enter a trend as it picks up steam.<\/p>\n
The most challenging piece of any momentum trading strategy is identifying those very trends. Even as you identify the entry points, you must then monitor the optimal exit points and know when to get out.<\/p>\n
One of the main benefits of momentum trading however is that\u00a0it can generate high returns in a short period of time, especially in volatile markets.<\/p>\n
Obviously there\u2019s a bit of risk involved in momentum trading because in essence, you\u2019re making a decision to buy a stock based on recent buying activities of other traders.<\/p>\n
So to be a successful momentum trader, one needs to be able to identify the best stocks quickly and accurately.<\/p>\n
The goal for momentum traders is basically to enter into trades at key points in the trend in order to maximise profits.<\/p>\n
There are several indicators to quantify momentum, and here we look at three main signals used by the market:<\/p>\n
52-week high<\/strong> \u00a0<\/p>\n Traders often view the\u00a052-week highs\u00a0as entry signals.<\/p>\n This is due what\u2019s called the \u201c52-week high effect\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 where if \u00a0a price has broken out above its 52-week range, there must be some factor that generated enough momentum to further continue the price movement in the same direction.<\/p>\n On the other hand, if a stock is far away from its 52-week high, chartists believe the momentum will continue going that way.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n 10 ASX small caps at 52-week high<\/strong><\/p>\n (data from Commsec)<\/strong><\/p>\n WordPress Table Plugin<\/a><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Cobram Estate Olives (ASX:CBO)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Cobram has been rising since announcing the completion of its 2023 Californian harvest.<\/p>\n The Californian harvest led to the production of 3.2 million litres of olive oil (89% higher than 2022 and 48% higher than 2021). Cobram notes:<\/p>\n \u201cThis growth in production is driven by the larger area under supply contract from third-party olive growers, and the maturing profile of our groves in California and was in line with our expectations and likely to place CBO as the largest olive oil producer in the USA.\u201d<\/p>\n Cobra says the increased olive oil availability will enable the company\u2019s USA operations to continue to grow sales.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Monash IVF (ASX:MVF)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n Monash says the first four months of trading for FY24 had been very pleasing.<\/p>\n \u201cThe positive momentum that built across our Domestic IVF and Women\u2019s Ultrasound business during the second half of FY23 is continuing in the current financial year, and activity is building in the Singapore business.\u201d<\/p>\n In Australia, the IVF industry has continued its positive growth from 2H23, with FY24 October YTD Australian industry stimulated cycles increasing by 2.8%.<\/p>\n In terms out of outlook, Monash says the Australian IVF industry and Monash IVF will continue to be a beneficiary of underlying structural demand drivers.<\/p>\n This market is supplemented by emerging services such as genetics and egg freezing, growing patient segments, in particularly the LGBTQIA+ segment, and new patient acquisition channels.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Simple Moving Averages (or SMA)<\/strong>\u00a0is another indicator that can be used to gauge momentum.<\/p>\n SMA is often used to determine whether a stock price will continue in the same direction, or if it will reverse a bull or bear trend.<\/p>\n As a general rule, if the current stock price is above the SMA, the price trend is up.
