{"id":3217,"date":"2023-12-14T05:58:34","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T05:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=3217"},"modified":"2023-12-14T05:58:34","modified_gmt":"2023-12-14T05:58:34","slug":"closing-bell-when-doves-fly-markets-soar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=3217","title":{"rendered":"Closing Bell: When doves fly, markets soar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ASX benchmark rises +1.66, like Dumbledore\u2019s pet Phoenix<\/p>\n<p>11 sectors end higher, Real Estate up +4pc, like a Steve Winwood song<\/p>\n<p>Small caps led by BAT, up like a bat in the night<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Local markets were handed a license to thrill on Thursday and they used it in much the same way Wall Street did unshackled by the US Fed and its bold new plan of three rate cuts next year.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>At 4pm on Thursday December 14, the S&amp;P\/ASX 200 (XJO) index was up 120 points, or +1.65%.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Via Google<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Traders in Sydney unsurprisingly went for the interest-rate-sensitive stocks off the bat, with tech, property and real estate investment trusts doing nicely thank you very much while the Materials sector also enjoyed a day in the field.<\/p>\n<p>For the diggers it was goldies and lithium that attracted the shoppers.<\/p>\n<p>After a torrid run, the lithium sector has rebounded, as the Fed\u2019s rising tide lifts all boats and as questions continue around the marginal cost of lithium production.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/allkem-ake\/\"><strong>Allkem (ASX:AKE)<\/strong><\/a> soared 10.27 per cent, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/pilbara-minerals-pls\/\"><strong>Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS)<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/core-lithium-cxo\/\"><strong>Core Lithium (ASX:CXO)<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/liontown-resources-ltr\/\"><strong>Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR)<\/strong><\/a> were all ahead by double-digits at lunch,\u00a0 with 200 countries signing up to the latest COP28 green energy transition statement.<\/p>\n<p>Spot gold is sitting at around $2,030 an ounce at the moment, hitting its biggest and baddest levels so far in a pretty whacky week.<\/p>\n<p>This is how the<strong> S&amp;P\/ASX All Ords Gold (XGD) index<\/strong> responded on Thursday \u2013 up +5.65% at 3.50pm:<\/p>\n\n<p>This is the XGD over a longer run. There\u2019s legs, you\u2019d reckon\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Via marketIndex<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 leading goldies like <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/northern-star-resources-nst\/\"><strong>Northern Star Resources (ASX:NST)<\/strong><\/a> to rally.<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/genesis-energy-gne\/\"><strong>Genesis Energy (ASX:GNE)<\/strong><\/a> is up more than 10% after acquiring <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/kin-mining-kin\/\"><strong>Kin Mining (ASX:KIN)<\/strong><\/a> prospective Bruno-Lewis and Raeside gold projects.<\/p>\n<p>And with the price of iron ore trading at $133 per tonne. the mega miners didn\u2019t miss out either \u2013 enter a <em>new<\/em>, new record high for <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/fortescue-fmg\/\"><strong>Fortescue (ASX:FMG)<\/strong><\/a> as it gained 1.78% to $27.19, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/rio-tinto-rio\/\"><strong>Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO)<\/strong><\/a> added 1.24% to $131.10, and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/bhp-bhp\/\"><strong>BHP (ASX:BHP)<\/strong><\/a> gained +1% to $48.40.<\/p>\n<p>Local bond yields were down and the local currency up against a weaker greenback, trade was also utterly unmoved by the jobless data, despite the unemployment rate clocking an 18-month high, according to the bureau of numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>ASX Sectors on Thursday<\/h2>\n<p><em>Via MarketIndex<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>We\u2019re still watching oil\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The doves also flew for oil traders as the latest US Federal Reserve chatter boosted the demand outlook. As it rises\u00a0 for a second straight session \u2013 West Texas heading back to US $70 on Thursday amid more bad counting and a large drop in US crude inventories.<\/p>\n<p><em>Via TradingEconomics<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This, despite a Norwegian tanker in the Red Sea attracting a few missiles and the odd gunman in a speedboat out of Yemen, illustrating just how fragile the shipping lines are for Middle East oil supplies.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And we\u2019re quite transfixed by gold\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned, beautiful bullion rose to around US$2,030 on Thursday, as an enfeebled US dollar and collapsing Treasury yields formed a golden rally: leading gold, to rally.<\/p>\n<p><em>Via TradingEconomics<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is gold for the last 20 years or so\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Via abcbullion.com.au<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>We\u2019re not really watching crypto\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>But if we were, we\u2019d note that the big boys \u2013 Bitcoin and Ethereum \u2013 are back on the move and in the crypto groove.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin jumped 4.7% while Ether found 4.1%. They\u2019ve both already given much of that back.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>And in the US\u2026<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Overnight, the Dow jumped 512 points, or 1.4%, to smash 37,000 pts and slap in the face its previous record high (36,799, made at a more innocent time as 2023 was just beginning).<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say thanks to the US Federal Reserve, which held its temper and projected three rate cuts next year.<\/p>\n<p>Fed officials expect to lower US rates by 75 basis points in 2024 a sharper pace of cuts than indicated in September\u2019s projections. The new projections also showed lower inflation forecasts for this year and next.<\/p>\n<p>By the way\u2026 Apple (APPL) also closed overnight at <em>another<\/em>, another all-time Apple high.
