{"id":2153,"date":"2023-11-23T02:21:47","date_gmt":"2023-11-23T02:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=2153"},"modified":"2023-11-23T02:21:47","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T02:21:47","slug":"small-caps-lunch-wrap-asx-down-commodities-depressed-gregor-has-covid-the-only-thing-doing-good-is-inflation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=2153","title":{"rendered":"Small Caps Lunch Wrap: ASX down, Commodities depressed, Gregor has Covid\u2026 The only thing doing good is inflation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Firstly\u2026 \u201csome b\u2019stard\u201d has apparently infected <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/author\/gregor-stronach\/\">Our Gregor<\/a> with Covid this morning.<\/p>\n<p>After much discussion we have concluded it\u2019s either <em><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/author\/peter-farquhar\/\">Stockhead Editor Peter <strong>The Pandemic<\/strong> Farquhar<\/a><\/em> or <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/author\/rob-badman\/\"><em><strong>Noxious Roaming Resources Reporter<\/strong><\/em> <em>Robert <strong>The Super Spreader<\/strong> Badman<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I can here avow to all of our hardcore regular readers that both these two very unAmerican Australians \u2013 and the guilty parties \u2013 will be dealt with as per <em>Stockhead\u2019s<\/em> long-standing Zero-PESTILENTIAL policy and walled up alive, as per the instructions of gothic master Edgar Allen Poe.<\/p>\n<p>One thing we don\u2019t abide by here at Stockhead is a toxic workplace where we can\u2019t mete out our own revolutionary ideas around tribal justice.<\/p>\n<p>However, as good as this knee-jerk retribution might make us feel, sadly, Gregor is out and it\u2019s me now guiding you through the ASX adventures at lunch \u2013 sans any <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/news\/asx-small-caps-lunch-wrap-whos-clearly-learned-an-important-lesson-mclessonface-this-week\/\">genuine Gregor-genre gags<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meh. I just don\u2019t find the mornings as funny as Mnsr Stronach does.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t help, mind you:<\/p>\n<p><em>Via Google<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yeah. That was the way the benchmark ASX200 began Thursday. A display even more pitiful and full of pathos when held up to the hectic gains made on Wall Street overnight.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>At lunchtime in Sydney on Thursday Nov. 23, the S&amp;P\/ASX 200 index was down -0.48% to 7039.5 points:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Via Google<\/em><\/p>\n<p>American indices rose in unison on Wednesday in New York, after US Treasury yields went and retraced all the heights they\u2019ve hit in the last few months, briefly dropping to 10-week lows. That and possibly the prospect\u00a0 of an imminent Thanksgiving holiday provided some outsized optimism across all three major US averages.<\/p>\n<p>The Dow Jones\u00a0 jumped almost 200 points, or +0.55%. The S&amp;P 500 found +0.4%, and the tech heavy Nasdaq Composite walked in a +0.45% gain to top 14,266.<\/p>\n<p>Even US small and mid caps outperformed, rising +0.7% and +0.6%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of the stocks trading in New York were in the green last night, a good measure of what a broad-based market rally looks like. This was no pre-vacation rally on light-volumes either \u2013 the Nasdaq saw high levels of participation, while almost 63% of the entire tech heavy index closed higher.<\/p>\n<p>At home by contrast, the benchmark is struggling all across the bourse, weighed down in particular by sharp losses in the Materials, Health and Energy Sectors.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>ASX Losses: Broad based enuf for ya?<\/h2>\n\n<p><em>Via MarketIndex<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oil prices got ambushed last night. But it is already on the recovery table, (WTI down only 0.55%) after US government data showed that America\u2019s crude inventories rose more than expected last week.<\/p>\n<p>That was actually in standing with the Tuesday report dropped by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/\">US Gov\u2019s Energy of Information Administration (EIA)<\/a> which clearly indicated a superlative 8.701 million-barrel increase in US crude inventories, smashing forecasts of a 3.592 million build.<\/p>\n<p>But why would traders pay attention to those guys (whose entire existence is to administer information on energy), when just freaking out is so much easier?<\/p>\n<p>Before that, the US benchmark dropped a <em>precipitous circa 5%<\/em> at one stage, before trimming the losses.<\/p>\n<p>The initial shock of a fews hours peace in Gaza was quickly compounded by Saudi Arabia saying it\u2019s rather unhappy over the production levels of other OPEC+ oil-producing members \u2013 who it would like to stop pulling their weight.<\/p>\n<p>Next week it\u2019ll be thrill a minute when OPEC member states are likely to get down to brass tacks on production quotas. Meanwhile, government data showed that US crude inventories rose more than expected last week, aligning with industry data reported on Tuesday. The latest EIA report indicated an 8.701 million-barrel increase in US crude inventories last week, surpassing forecasts for a 3.592 million build.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Here\u2019s a chart:<\/h2>\n<p>Via TradingEconomics<\/p>\n<p>So they\u2019re lining up for the stick this morning in Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>After signing off Wednesday with a bif spiel about how the materials sector is back, baby. Losses at lunch are being led by materials.<\/p>\n<p>Namely the mining and energy stocks, which are at least in some terrific comapny.<\/p>\n<p>Weak-ass commodity prices, another monthly contraction in local manufacturing and services PMIs serving only to underline the major culprit for the curdling of local sentiment \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/news\/rba-boss-michele-blunt-tool-bullock-shows-shes-a-hawk-of-a-different-feather-in-terrifying-sydney-inflation-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an overnight address by the RBA Governor M. Bullock, who scared the pants off homeowners<\/a>, rich people, rich people with children, homeowners with or without children. Poor people. Their children. And their children\u2019s children.<\/p>\n<p>The blue chip names are leading losses. The major iron ore producers <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/bhp-bhp\/\"><strong>BHP (ASX:BHP)<\/strong><\/a> (-1.6%) and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/rio-tinto-rio\/\"><strong>Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO)<\/strong><\/a> (-0.9%), <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/fortescue-metals-group-fmg\/\"><strong>Fortescue Metals Group (ASX:FMG)<\/strong><\/a> (-0.6%).<\/p>\n<p>The major oil producers <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/south32-s32\/\"><strong>South32 (ASX:S32)<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/woodside-energy-group-wds\/\"><strong>Woodside Energy Group (ASX:WDS)<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/santos-sto\/\"><strong>Santos (ASX:STO)<\/strong><\/a> also lower.<\/p>\n<p>Other disreputable big cap moneymakers getting smacked about include \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Eh. You know what? We don\u2019t have much to do with <em><strong>The S&amp;P\/ASX 20 (XTL)<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 our narrowest of narrow Aussie indices which is the home of the ASX top 20 stocks by float-adjusted market cap, but\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The index is highly liquid and accounts for ~49% (September 2023) of our entire equity market.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Here\u2019s another chart: 17 of the top 20 biggest stocks are (also) depressed on Thursday<\/h2>\n<p>Via Market Index<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>And here, by god, is a table: ASX Sectors at Lunch<\/h2>\n<p>Via MarketIndex<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Meanwhile\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>And the OpenAI saga continues\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I know everything about this, BTW. I was up late and sat through about four (seemingly) endless podcasts by massive Silicon Valley insiders from the Times, The Economist and the WaPo. It was weird to hear how excited they were, when the whole shebang shows how much level heads are not prevailing around AI.<\/p>\n<p>The main takeaway isn\u2019t that this kid Sam is back in the big chair, that\u2019s but a deck chair on the Titanic.<\/p>\n<p>No, the moral here is that we\u2019re all going to briefly get rich before everything you saw in every The Terminator movie happens, except the cool bits like the Guns n Roses motorbike chase.<\/p>\n<p>That, frankly, would almost make it all okay. Go home. Nor indeed do I know much about mining, Brazil, or lithium.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s fair to say combining all three is a good idea right now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/armada-metals-amm\/\"><strong>Armada Metals (ASX:AMM)<\/strong><\/a> is up about 40% on Thursday morning,\u00a0 having pulled off the trifecta.<\/p>\n<p>The local prospective explorer says it\u2019s scored a deal with Brazilian counterpart <em>Antares Minerais Estrat\u00e9gicos<\/em> to acquire \u2018legal ownership and title over certain Exploration Permits and Applications for Exploration covering an area of 16,750ha in the eastern portion of Minas Gerais State, Brazil.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Apparently they\u2019re the new owners of some 14 mineral permits divvied up into four blocks. You don\u2019t need to know their names.<\/p>\n<p>ALL\u00a0 are accessible via Brazil\u2019s terrific paved roads and by a few \u2018well-maintained farm\u2019 roads.\u00a0 They\u2019ve got a tonne of high voltage power lines, a nearby railway which goes directly to the Tubar\u00e3o Port at Vitoria, (the capital city of Espirito Santos State), and there\u2019s an airport (of sorts\u2026 well there\u2019s airport infrastructure, which is as good as) at nearby Governador Valadares.<\/p>\n<p>The other standout on a glum day is security-as-a-service platform <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/scout-security-sct\/\"><strong>Scout Security (ASX:SCT)<\/strong><\/a> which is in the business of\u00a0 providing \u2018affordable DIY solutions to some of the largest security, internet service and telecommunications providers in the world\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>SCT recently dropped an investor presso and this morning has advised people to ignore <em>the most meaningful bits<\/em> of the presso:<\/p>\n<p><em>Via Scout<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pancreatic cancer is a hard sell, but an easy buy on Thursday, following some very positive preclinical data for cell therapy player <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/chimeric-therapeutics-chm\/\"><strong>Chimeric Therapeutics (ASX:CHM)<\/strong><\/a> and its lead CHM 1301 therapy.<\/p>\n<p>The local mini-pharma reports that its next gen, off the shelf CLTX CAR NK cell therapy \u201cdemonstrates the synergies of assets in the Chimeric portfolio, as it combines the recently announced efficacy of CHM 1101, Chimeric\u2019s CLTX CAR T cell therapy, with the efficacy and off-the-shelf convenience of CHM 02012, Chimeric\u2019s NK cell platform, to create a next generation CLTX CAR NK cell therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I know. But this is not a marketing company.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently we\u2019re talking up to 300% \u2018enhanced cell killing demonstrated compared to first generation NK cells,\u2019 as well as some decent evidence of the drug marching \u2018into two new solid tumours \u2013 pancreatic cancer and ovarian cancer.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>A very pleased Jennifer Chow, CEO and MD, says the CHM 1301 program is set to advance to the next stage of preclinical development under academic research collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very pleased with the rapid success being shown with our next generation CHM 1301 platform\u2026 We believe this work is highly impactful as it demonstrates the synergy of the assets that currently exist in Chimeric\u2019s portfolio, the ability for Chimeric to expand into new disease areas and the potential for enhanced efficacy with an off the shelf version of our CHM 1101 CAR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>ASX SMALL CAP LOSERS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Here are the most-worst performing ASX small cap stocks for 23 November [intraday]:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Swipe or scroll to reveal full table.
