{"id":12823,"date":"2024-12-09T17:06:41","date_gmt":"2024-12-09T22:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=12823"},"modified":"2024-12-09T17:06:44","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T22:06:44","slug":"comcast-faces-subscriber-challenges-shares-drop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=12823","title":{"rendered":"Comcast Faces Subscriber Challenges, Shares Drop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Comcast (CMCSA) shares plummeted by as much as 7.5% on Monday after CEO Dave Watson revealed the company expects to lose over 100,000 broadband subscribers in the fourth quarter, surpassing Wall Street\u2019s prediction of a 63,300 decline, according to Bloomberg\u2019s consensus estimates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stock Reaction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The stock\u2019s midday slump marked Comcast\u2019s largest intraday decline since April 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Broadband Subscriber Losses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Watson, speaking at the UBS Media Conference in New York City, outlined the factors driving the losses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First Half Trends:<\/strong> \u201cWe lost just under 100,000 [broadband subscribers] per quarter during the first half of the year,\u201d Watson said.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Temporary Q3 Gains:<\/strong> The third quarter saw improved performance due to Olympic marketing efforts, seasonal student returns, and competitor disruptions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Return to Q1-Q2 Patterns:<\/strong> These temporary gains were not sustained, as Q4 trends resemble those from earlier in the year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the third quarter, Comcast reported a loss of 87,000 internet customers. Watson described the broadband marketplace as \u201ccompetitively intense.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Competitive Pressure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mobile providers like Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&amp;T have entered the broadband market, targeting budget-conscious consumers with flexible plans. All three companies recorded subscriber gains in Q3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, two hurricanes in the Southeast earlier this year exacerbated broadband losses by approximately 10,000 subscribers and caused a slight dip in average revenue per user (ARPU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watson expects ARPU growth to remain at the lower end of a 3%-4% range for the current quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cable Cord-Cutting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Comcast\u2019s struggles extend beyond broadband. The company reported a loss of 365,000 TV customers in Q3 as more consumers transitioned to streaming services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strategic Moves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To address the challenges posed by cord-cutting, Comcast announced plans last month to spin off its cable TV properties (except for Bravo) into a new entity, tentatively named SpinCo.
