{"id":11442,"date":"2024-06-26T06:47:23","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T06:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=11442"},"modified":"2024-06-26T06:47:23","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T06:47:23","slug":"closing-bell-its-gotta-be-bonds-after-asx-pantsed-by-lingering-inflation-fears-of-august-rate-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=11442","title":{"rendered":"Closing Bell: It\u2019s gotta be bonds after ASX pantsed by lingering inflation, fears of August rate hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ASX falls 0.7pc on sticky CPI read<\/p>\n<p>Consumer Discretionary stocks dragged down by CKF and HVN<br \/>\nTop small cap performers\u00a0 include Metallica and Actinogen Medical<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bond yields soared and the ASX200 seemed to hit terminal velocity at around lunchtime, following a dodgy inflation read which nudged the market into pricing in a potential August rate hike.<\/p>\n<p>The S&amp;P\/ASX200 closed lower Wednesday, dropping 55.80 points or 0.71% to 7,783.00.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Via ASX<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The brittle benchmark accelerated into a Wednesday ditch, crossing the 1% line of no return, after the ABS dropped some uglier than imagined inflation data fro the previuos month.<\/p>\n<p>The headline read was bad, but the Reserve Bank\u2019s preferred measure \u2013 core CPI \u2013 <em>really<\/em> spiked, hitting 4.4% in May from 4.1% in April.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re the only country in the G10 where underlying inflation is intolerably high, according to Deutsche Bank chief economist Phil O\u2019Donaghoe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now assume the cash rate ends this year at 4.6%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deutsche sees the RBA lifting interest rates in August and has the first rate cuts \u201cpencilled in [for] Q2-2025.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From being down 42 points (-0.54%) ahead of the Bureau of Stats release this morning, the ASX200 doubled its losses over the next few hours to hit (-1.04%) in mid-arvo trade.<\/p>\n<p>All this thanks to a monthly consumer price (CPI) read which showed inflation spiking a bit more than expected.<\/p>\n<p>According to the ABS, the Aussie CPI hit 4% in May, up from 3.6% in April and an unwelcome high shot on the 3.8% expected by economists.<\/p>\n<p>That did not make life joyful for the rate sensitive sectors.<\/p>\n<p>After some of the solid recent returns made by local property, consumer discretionary and banking stocks, it was those rate fearing sectors which led the retreat with the smart\/scared money following bond bullishness.<\/p>\n<p>The AUD jumped about 0.5% on the news and Australia\u2019s 3-year bond yield found an easy 11 basis points to hit 4.35%<\/p>\n<p>Wait \u2013 here\u2019s what happened in Aussie Bonds today:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Via TradingEconomics<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the ASX, the discretionary stock majors were hit hardest, the sector giving back all the gains of the previous session and more led by a near 3% slide over at <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/wesfarmers-wes\/\"><strong>Wesfarmers (ASX:WES)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also terrible and not very discreet abut it \u2013 Harvey Norman. The brokers at Barrenjoey lowered their price target (PT) on <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/harvey-norman-holdings-hvn\/\"><strong>Harvey Norman Holdings (ASX:HVN)<\/strong><\/a> to $4.00 from $4.50 laying the blame at the feet of faltering retail conditions amid the declining macro outlook.<\/p>\n<p>CKF and HVN were the worst of the big caps down 8.9% and 8.3% respectively.<\/p>\n<p>But also terrible today \u2013 lithium.<\/p>\n<p>More terrible than usual and it\u2019s usually been a terrible sector without any external help.<\/p>\n<p>All the headline lithium producers,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/liontown-resources-ltr\/\"><strong>Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR)<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/mineral-resources-min\/\"><strong>Mineral Resources (ASX:MIN)<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/pilbara-minerals-pls\/\"><strong>Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS)<\/strong><\/a> lost between 5 and 2.5%. after China\u2019s lithium futures index fell another 5% on Tuesday (to $US12,000 a tonne) to take its losses for June somewhere near 16%.<\/p>\n<p>On the M&amp;A front uranium developer <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/bannerman-energy-bmn\/\"><strong>Bannerman Energy (ASX:BMN)<\/strong><\/a> has taken advantage of the peter Dutton rally in uranium stocks, lobbing a $76 million cap raise in the form of a share placement.<\/p>\n<p>Fund managers were being offered Bannerman shares at $3.30 a pop \u2013 representing a 7.8% discount to the last close and 10.% lower than the 5-day volume-weighted average price.<\/p>\n<p>The other miners weighed on Wednesday too. Copper futures are at their lowest levels since mid-April with rising inventories hard to move amid the\u00a0 \u00a0uncertain global demand outlook.<\/p>\n<p>The latest PMI reports have also noit helped, suggesting a poor outlook for manufacturing exacerbated by slowing industrial demand in top copper consumer, China.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last five days, the index is virtually unchanged, but is currently 1.6% below its 52-week high.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span>ASX Sectors on Wednesday<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Via marketIndex<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>The UNASX<\/h2>\n<p>On Wall Street overnight, the S&amp;P 500 rose by +0.39%, the blue chips Dow Jones index was down by -0.76%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq lifted by +1.26%.<\/p>\n<p>Nvidia led the way for the \u201cMagnificent 7\u201d, bouncing back by +6.75% after a -13% slump in the previous three sessions.<\/p>\n<p>Also \u2013 Finland\u2019s unemployment rate rose to 10.2% in May, from 9% a year ago. Easy money.<\/p>\n<p>In complex, but ultimately happy news, <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/actinogen-medical-acw\/\"><strong>Actinogen Medical (ASX:ACW)<\/strong><\/a> \u00a0says its had a very positive phase 2a biomarker trial for its Xanamem\u00a0 Alzheimer\u2019s Disease candidate, which was published in the (100th edition!) of the Journal of Alzheimer\u2019s Disease.
