{"id":10047,"date":"2024-05-23T06:08:16","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T06:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=10047"},"modified":"2024-05-23T06:08:16","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T06:08:16","slug":"closing-bell-xero-takes-charge-with-a-10pc-jump-goldies-dive-on-profit-taking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/economicherald.net\/?p=10047","title":{"rendered":"Closing Bell: Xero takes charge with a 10pc jump; Goldies dive on profit taking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Xero and Nvidia buoyed Tech, while BHP dragged Mining<br \/>\nGold stocks were the worst performing miners today<br \/>\nNew tensions over China\u2019s drills near Taiwan<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The benchmark ASX 200 index was down about -0.50% on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/xero-xro\/\">Xero\u2019s (ASX:XRO)<\/a><\/strong>\u00a010% jump gave the Tech sector a boost today, while<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/bhp-bhp\/\"> BHP\u2019s (ASX:BHP)<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0-2.65% drop dragged down the Mining sector.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Xero\u2019s revenue hit NZ$1.7 billion for the year up to March, thanks to more subscribers and higher revenue per subscriber.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Adjusted EBITDA jumped 75% to $NZ526.5 million, with CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy saying that \u201cXero is positioned well as we move into FY25\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Tech sector was also boosted by Nasdaq-listed chipmaker AI chipmaker Nvidia, which just announced a whopping seven-fold increase in profit, rocketing its stock to an all-time high overnight.<\/p>\n<p>BHP dropped over -2%<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0as it gets an<\/span>\u00a0extra week to come up with another takeover offer for Anglo American after Anglo turned down a third and supposedly final proposal worth $74 billion. Anglo said it will still entertain talks with BHP, even though it\u2019s already turned down three offers this month.<\/p>\n<p>Still in the large caps space, agricultural tech business <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/nufarm-nuf\/\">Nufarm (ASX:NUF)<\/a><\/strong> tumbled -5% after guiding the market to a full year FY24 EBITDA of between $350 million and $390 million, the midpoint of which implies a decline of 16% from the pcp.<\/p>\n<p>Gold stocks were the worst performing miners today as spot bullion suffered its biggest one-day drop since April.<\/p>\n<p>The bullion rally finally cooled off as investors took profits and traders reined in their bets for Fed Reserve rate cuts this year following a hawkish-sounding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/pressreleases\/monetary20240522a.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FOMC minutes report last night<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re seeing some week-long liquidation, some profit taking by the shorter term futures traders; all of which is not unusual in a market that hit a record high,\u201d said <em>Jim Wyckoff at Kitco Metals.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oil stocks were also under pressure today after crude prices declined 2% overnight.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Source: MarketIndex<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Let the chips war begin<\/h2>\n<p>Elsewhere, Asian shares were mixed this afternoon, but<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nvidia\u2019s unstoppable run has stirred excitement in Asia.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea has just unveiled a US$19 billion incentives package to give its chip sector a boost, a move that\u2019ll benefit giants like Samsung.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This comes as the global chip industry braces for a major showdown.<\/p>\n<p>The EU has recently come up with a US$46.3 billion plan to boost the region\u2019s chips manufacturing capacity, while the US has so far been doling out US$33bn in grants for advanced chipmaking facilities in the country.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile there\u2019s tension in the region as China kicked off a military drill around Taiwan today, just three days after William Lai, who China loathes, took office as the island\u2019s new president.<\/p>\n<p>China says the drill \u201cserves as a strong punishment for the separatist acts of Taiwan independence\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, markets in Wall Street are heading towards a Monday public holiday weekend, but tonight, the closely watched US weekly unemployment claims report is due out.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>ASX SMALL CAP LEADERS<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s best performing small cap stocks:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Swipe or scroll to reveal full table. The placement, done at a small 8.3% discount to the last traded price, is cornerstoned by <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/experts\/tru-datt-its-a-pretty-good-time-to-call-yourself-an-asx-small-cap\/\">Datt Capital<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/lowell-resources-fund-lrt\/\">Lowell Resources Fund (ASX:LRT)<\/a>. The company notes that the funds raised will also be used to explore SER\u2019s broader South Cobar Project along with advancing SER\u2019s other exploration assets and general working capital. Another piece of news highlighted by the company is that Tony Gu, Datt Capital\u2019s partner and head of research, has been appointed to the SER board as a non-executive director.<\/p>\n<p>Niobium is having something of a moment this week, and <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/rarex-ree\/\">RareX (ASX:REE)<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/resources\/rarex-acquires-district-scale-niobium-project-with-near-term-drill-targets\/\">acquired the district-scale Khaleesi project<\/a> in WA\u2019s Eastern Yilgarn region where historical drilling had returned elevated levels of niobium. It comes after the completion of successful $1.5m, internally brokered, capital raise. That news has pushed up the share price of the rare earths explorer\/developer by an eye-catching 44% at time of writing. The acquisition has been dubbed the Khaleesi Project and is located along strike from the \u201chighly endowed\u201d Ponton Dyke deposit (most recently held by <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/galaxy-resources-gxy\/\">Galaxy Resources (ASX:GXY)<\/a>, since merged with <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/orocobre-ore\/\">Orocobre (ASX:ORE)<\/a>), which has reportedly returned some of Australia\u2019s best rare earth intersections \u2013 up to 28m at 10% total rare earth oxides (TREO) including 6m at 20.57% TREO.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/kalgoorlie-gold-mining-kal\/\">Kalgoorlie Gold Mining (ASX:KAL)<\/a> was up today on its fresh discovery of extensive, thick gold mineralisation and anomalism at its Wessex target at the Pinjin project, following the first pass aircore drill program. New intercepts include: 28m at 1.27g\/t Au from 36m, and 12m at 1.17g\/t Au from 52m. Pinjin is situated at the southern end of the Pinjin Goldfield and is about 140 km northeast of Kalgoorlie\u2013Boulder.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/cazaly-resources-caz\/\"><strong>Cazaly Resources (ASX:CAZ)<\/strong><\/a> was up on no news, but a hell of a lot of trading volume. Not sure entirely, or at all, actually, what\u2019s going with CAZ today to back up this rise, however.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/strickland-metals-stk\/\">Strickland Metals (ASX:STK)<\/a><\/strong> is also enjoying gold\u2019s glow today <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/resources\/strickland-strikes-up-to-20g-t-gold-already-with-the-first-two-diamond-holes-at-palomino\/\">after drilling results<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 including a highlight 17m at 10.6g\/t Au from 144.7m \u2013 at the Palomino prospect \u201cexceeded expectations\u201d. Palomino is a prospect at STK\u2019s 100% owned Yandal Gold Project in WA.\u00a0 These latest assays have turned high grade at \u201csignificant width\u201d, says the company, and in addition to the highlight above, results also included: 13.7m at 6.3g\/t Au from 133.4m (incl 3m at 20g\/t Au).\u00a0 Further Palomino assays are \u201cdue shortly\u201d, along with IP survey results, notes the company, which remains very well funded with about $51.4m in cash at the time of writing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/wisr-wzr\/\"><strong>Wisr (ASX:WZR)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/wisr-wzr\/\">secured a $50m facility from global financial services firm Nomura<\/a><\/strong>, which will accelerate the non-bank lender\u2019s path to profitability. Wisr has maintained deliberate moderated loan volume settings in Q3 FY24 but intends to pivot to loan volume growth settings in Q4 FY24 and beyond. WZR says its margins are expanding with portfolio net interest margin (NIM) 5.24% in Q4 FY24, slightly up on pcp of 5.20%.\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Quarterly revenue was $23.1m, a 4% decrease on pcp, while EBITDA of $300k, was an improvement on pcp, which recorded a loss of $800k.\u00a0The company\u2019s quarterly net operating cash flow of $4.5m, was a 13% increase on pcp.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/aft-pharmaceuticals-afp\/\">AFT Pharmaceuticals (ASX:AFP)<\/a> has reported record profits and robust growth for the 12 months to March, driven by strong sales of over-the-counter medicines in Australasia and growing demand in international markets. Full-year operating revenue was up 25% to $195.4 million, driven by sales in International and Asian markets which grew by 70%. Record EBITDA of $26.2 million, up 22%, and NPAT increased 46% on pcp to $15.6 million.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/lefroy-exploration-lex\/\">Lefroy Exploration (ASX:LEX)<\/a> announced the results from its Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling campaign targeting the Havelock and Lucky Strike gold targets, which commenced in April. Significant assays returned include: 5m @ 4.22g\/t Au from 145m and 7m @ 2.04 g\/t Au from 37m.<\/p>\n<p>And\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/company\/sun-silver-ss1\/\">Sun Silver (ASX:SS1)<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/stockhead.com.au\/resources\/plans-underway-for-major-drilling-campaign-at-sun-silvers-292moz-maverick-springs-silver-asset\/\">preparing to carry out drilling<\/a> at its Maverick Springs project in Elko County, Nevada, with three local contractors tendering for the drill contract.
